How much of the year is left?

Those numbers are live. They’re worked out from your own device’s date, so they’re right wherever you are.

There’s a year progress card at the top of Days Left. It’s the simplest idea in the app, and probably the one that hits hardest. Seeing the year as a bar that fills up, rather than a page of dates, makes it real in a way a calendar doesn’t.

How the numbers are worked out

The percentage is simple: time since midnight on 1 January, divided by the length of the whole year. 2026 has 365 days, so each day is a little over 0.27% of it.

“Days left” is the number of whole days after today. If it’s 30 December, there’s one day left: the 31st. Some calculators count today as well, which is why you’ll see answers that are one apart. Neither is wrong. They’re just answering slightly different questions. (If you want to go down that rabbit hole, I wrote about counting the days between two dates.)

Weekends are counted by Saturdays. If today is Saturday, this one counts.

Why a progress bar for the year works

Researchers at Wharton have a name for something you’ve probably felt: the fresh start effect. In a 2014 study, Hengchen Dai, Katherine Milkman and Jason Riis found that people are more likely to start on goals around “temporal landmarks”, like the beginning of a week, a month, a new year or the day after a birthday. Gym visits go up. Searches for “diet” go up. A landmark gives you a clean line between the old you and the new one.

A year progress bar does something similar, but in reverse. It makes the end of a period visible. Eighty percent sounds very different from “late October”. It’s a gentle prod, not a deadline.

The trick is to let it prod you in a useful direction, rather than into a panic about everything you haven’t done.

What to do with the last stretch of the year

I don’t think the answer is to cram twelve months of resolutions into ten weeks. A few things that work better:

Pick one thing to finish

Not five. One. The half-read book, the room you meant to clear out, the course you’re 60% through. Finishing one thing before the bar fills up feels much better than starting six.

Book something for early next year

January is long and gray for a lot of us. Having a trip or a weekend away already booked for February gives the start of next year something to look forward to. There’s good research that the waiting is half the fun, which I go into in why counting down to a trip makes you happier.

Count the weekends, not the days

Seventy days sounds like plenty. Ten weekends sounds like what it is. If there are people you meant to see this year, the weekend count is the more honest number to plan with.

Look back, briefly

Scroll through your photos from January. Most of us remember a year as “busy” and forget how much actually happened in it. It’s a nice antidote to the “where did the year go” feeling.

Keep the year on your Home Screen

The Year progress widget in Days Left shows the whole year as a grid of dots, with the days gone filled in. On an iPhone you can put it on your Lock Screen, too, as a small ring.

Inside the app, the same card shows the year month by month, so you can see exactly where you are. Setup steps are in the iPhone and Android guides.

Days left in the year, at the start of each month

For 2026, which isn’t a leap year:

On the 1st ofDays left after itYear gone
January3640%
February3338.5%
March30516.2%
April27424.7%
May24432.9%
June21341.4%
July18349.6%
August15258.1%
September12166.6%
October9174.8%
November6083.3%
December3091.5%

The “year gone” column is measured at midnight as each month begins. One small thing that surprised me when I made this table: the year isn’t halfway done until about midday on 2 July.

Quick answers

How many days are in 2026?

2026 has 365 days. It isn't a leap year. The next leap year is 2028, which has 366 days.

How is the year progress percentage worked out?

Take the time that has passed since midnight on 1 January and divide it by the length of the whole year, then multiply by 100. On 1 July in a normal year you're just under halfway, at about 49.6%.

How many weekends are left this year?

Count the Saturdays between today and 31 December. The live counter at the top of this page does it for you.

Is there a widget that shows year progress?

Yes. Days Left has a Year progress widget for the iPhone Home Screen and Lock Screen and for Android, which shows the year as a grid of dots.
